Description

Salik is in fact the name of the electronic road system in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. It was presented to improve the traffic flow and reduce congestion in the city by imposing vehicle fees to use certain roads during peak hours. Here are some basic points about the Salik system:

RFID technology: Salik means “clear” or “open” in Arabic, and uses the technology of raising radio frequency (RFID). The vehicles are equipped with a small RFID brand that communicates with the upper bridges at the graphic collection gates.

Discount fees automatically: When a Salik card passes from the bottom of the tariff gate, the system automatically deducts the fees from the driver’s paid driver account. This eliminates the need for physical traffic kiosks and cash payments.

Launch date: Salik was officially launched by the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai on July 1, 2007. It was presented as part of Dubai’s traffic management efforts and encouraging the use of public transport.

Traffic tariff gates: There are many traffic tariff gates that are located at strategic points on the main roads in Dubai. The fee gates are usually located at entry and exit points in certain areas within the city.

Clamping hours: Salik fees vary depending on the time of the day. Higher fees are usually applied during traffic hours to encourage drivers to think about alternative roads or means of transportation.

Preparation accounts: Drivers must create a pre -paid valid account and attach the RFID card to the windshield of their car. The money is deducted from the account when it passes through the fee gates.

Exceptions: Some vehicle categories, such as public buses and emergency vehicles, are exempted from Salik fees.

The Salik system has succeeded in managing traffic and generating revenues for infrastructure projects for transportation in Dubai. It also served as a model for other cities looking to implement electronic systems similar to the collection of fees.
